Human Jaw Bone

Age: unknown

Sex: male

Date: 16 Mar 2019

Place: River Colne, Rowhedge, Essex

A human jaw bone was found near the River Colne at Rowhedge.

Following the discovery the police spent nearly two weeks at the scene engaged in forensic work which continued through the night.

The jaw bone was found near the river by a well-used path off Thanet Walk near Marsh Crescent and Oxton Close.

The jaw bone was found by two people walking their dogs and a bird watcher who became alarmed when they saw that it looked human and contacted the police.

The police said, 'We were called at 2.35pm on Saturday March 16 with reports a jawbone believed to be human had been found along a river walk in Rowhedge. Enquiries are ongoing'.

They said that the jaw bone was from a male and that they were keeping an open mind over its origin, adding that DNA had been extracted from the bone but that there were no matches to people on the missing person database.

In January 2023, the police said that there was 'extremely strong evidence' that the jawbone came from a man that had thrown himself infront of a train. An inquest was held for the man in 2019 at which it was concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances connected with his death.
